What it argues
Ghoshal argues that organizations, like climates, have a palpable atmosphere that drains or energizes the people in them. Most large companies create a context of constraint, compliance, control and contract, then blame employees for passivity. He calls on managers to create instead a context of stretch, discipline, trust and support, in which ordinary people naturally take initiative and the front line drives performance.
