What it argues
A consensus study, the first broad review of the field since the 1988 report known as the Amundson Report. It describes chemical engineering as the engineering of systems, from molecules to plants, that integrate chemical, physical and biological elements. It acknowledges both the field’s contributions and the environmental harms it has caused. It recommends research, education and workforce priorities organized around decarbonizing energy, a circular economy, sustainable food and water, and health and medicine, all calling for systems-level thinking and work across disciplines.
