What it argues

The inventor’s own comprehensive treatment of his chart. It explains how waves travel on transmission lines and how impedance maps onto the chart’s coordinates, then covers its scales, equivalent circuits, bandwidth and Q, transmission coefficients, matching with stubs, slugs and lumped networks, negative-resistance loads and stability. The 1995 reprint adds a biography of Smith, describing his work at Bell Labs and the chart’s slow path from rectangular plot to universal tool, and material on software versions of the chart.
